SEASONAL CYCLE OF CANOLA

FROM AUTUMN TO SUMMER

Canola production follows a fascinating and distinct seasonal cycle that attracts many visitors to the region. The cycle typically begins in autumn when farmers prepare their paddocks for planting. Canola seeds are sown during this time, taking advantage of the cool and wet conditions that are ideal for germination. As winter sets in, the bright yellow flowers of the canola plants start to bloom, creating stunning scenes across the countryside.

During spring, the canola plants continue to grow and develop, benefiting from the increasing sunlight and warmer temperatures. Bees and other pollinators are attracted to the fields, playing a crucial role in the fertilisation process. During this stage, the canola fields burst with vibrant yellow blossoms creating a picturesque landscape that is a delight to see. By early summer, the canola pods begin to form, signalling that the cycle is nearing its end.

THE BREATHTAKING TRANSFORMATION

As summer progresses, the canola plants start to mature and the pods turn from green to a distinctive brown colour. Harvest typically takes place in late summer with farmers using specialised equipment to gather the canola pods from the plant. The harvested seeds are then processed to extract the valuable canola oil. The oil extracted from canola seeds is not only used for cooking oil but also as a key ingredient in biodiesel fuel, contributing to sustainable energy production. Additionally, canola meal, a by-product of oil extraction, serves as a valuable source of protein for livestock feed. Throughout its growth cycle, canola plays a crucial role in agriculture and food production.

Visitors to the region during the canola cycle can witness the breathtaking transformation of the landscape, from the vibrant yellow blooms of spring to the golden colours of summer. It’s a sight that captures the essence of agriculture and showcases the beauty and importance of canola production in the region.
